CQWW - "The Contest"
"hello radio"
If it doesn't kill you, it will make you stronger !!!!!
In 1995, I decided to take part in the cqww-ssb contest, working from Ghana, West Africa
as 9G1BJ, and as I was already working there complete with a small hf station, that
seemed to be a great idea, but the operation soon turned pear shaped for me.
Members of my work force turned up at our house at regular intervals, requesting my
presence  on site, in order to sort out a number of "problems" that had arisen.
So after numerous visits to the sites, I was forced to abandon my efforts in this contest.
Has anyone ever sorted out one of these paper logs at any time? The very thought of
it terrifies me, checking for duplicates alone must be a nightmare, however, my mate
Paul  completed the task successfully, and complied with all the rules and regulations.
However, he did threaten to use violence on me if I sent paper logging to him again,
So, back to thoughts of future contests made
me consider some sort of computer logging
programme which would cope with the rigours of
the CQWW contest, but no one was aware of
the fact that this would not be in place for the
1997 contest either, despite the fact that I was
running a state of the art laptop computer, well,
it was state of the art back in those days ! ! ! !
9G1BJ
1997 contest time saw me running a new setup in the form of a three element Fritzel beam, Heil Pro-set
mic with footswitch, and an Icom 756, and being placed World # 3 - 15 mtrs / single operator, and Paul
was delighted to be the recipient of lots of paper logs to sort out and submit to the CQWW people.
However, the 1998 contest time arrived with me running full contest logging, the station being the same
as the previous year, but unfortunately, a power failure saw me reverting to paper logging, with all the
contacts having to be entered onto the computer at a later date, then eventually e-mailed to the USA.
Despite the many problems encountered both during, and after the contest, including major thunder
storms, I was delighted to be awarded the World # 1 spot working 10 mtrs, single band, single operator.
